Professional standards

Lawyers who are authorised to appear before the French Council of State and Court of Cassation, also known as Council Lawyers (Avocats aux Conseils) are public legal officials who, as members of a regulated profession, specialise in a particular legal process known as cassation, which involves appealing against judgments that have not applied the law correctly.

They work to stringent professional and ethical standards and they provide genuine advocacy in the defence of their clients’ interests, whilst ensuring that their arguments are credible, fair and respectable.

Strictly independent, all Council Lawyers must ensure that, for every single case they handle, they give their clients an objective opinion as to the likelihood of their appeal succeeding, and the risks they face.
